Released almost exactly 11 years after Clint Eastwood's Unforgiven, Kevin Costner's Open Range proved yet again that the Western is the classic American genre. While it lacks the thematic impact of Eastwood's masterpiece, Costner's first film since 1997's ill-fated The Postman returns the actor/director of Dances With Wolves to the open prairies of America--in this case the free-range frontier of 1882--where legal "free-grazing" cattle drives were falling prey to empire-building land-owners. In the wake of territorial murder, free-grazing cowboys Boss (Robert Duvall) and Charley (Costner) seek vengeful justice against the ruthless rancher (Michael Gambon) who threatens their law-abiding survival. A feisty ally (the late Michael Jeter, in his next-to-final film role) and a doctor's sister (Annette Bening) offer support during climactic shootouts, masterfully staged with the shock and suddenness of real-life gunfire. Rich in character development and thick-hided humor, this handsome production redeemed Costner's directorial career with a well-told story (by Craig Storper, based on Lauran Paine's novel The Open Range Men), flawless performances, and stunning Canadian locations. --Jeff Shannon

Customer Rating: Summary: Open Range Comment: Open Range is easily one the best westerns made. The gunfights are very realistic, and the story keeps you interested, and is hard to get bored with.
Customer Rating: Summary: Another of my favorite westerns. excellent movie Comment: Along with A Fistful of Dollars, this is one of my favorite westerns. Robert Duvall, and Kevin Costner play two free-range cattleman, who wage a range war against a powerful, corrupt rancher. This film has an awesome shootout.
Customer Rating: Summary: there's things that gnaw on a man worse than dying Comment: Sometimes a man has to stand up in the face of almost certain death, because to do otherwise is more unbearable. That's one of the lessons in this outstanding Western. Duvall and Costner are 2 of my favorites and they don't disappoint. It's good to see Costner play a man that's not embarrassed about being right and doesn't take the whole movie to convince he ought to defend the weak.
Customer Rating: Summary: Open Range Comment: This is also a Christmas gift and I have seen it and the movie is a good one to watch.
Customer Rating: Summary: WOW! A tribute to the golden age of westerns. Comment: This is by far one of the top 10 of all western movies. I rank it with The Searchers, Shane, High Noon. A cinematic treat from somber start to the explosive yet tender end. Eat your heart out OK Corral. This is what is missing from so many modern movies. A story that is told without the F word every 5 seconds, no mindless sex, no graphic gore. Just an old fashioned western story about the struggle between right and wrong, good and bad, and the road to redemption. Keep it coming Mr. Costner.
