Editorial Reviews:

The latest disc from Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band, The Phat Pack showcases more of the hot licks that fans have come to know and love. In addition to the playful jazz of such tracks as "Whodunnit?" and "Attack of the Killer Tomatoes" , the Big Phat Band teams up with guest vocalist Dianne Reeves, fresh from winning a Grammy for her work on the soundtrack to the Oscar winning film "Good Night and Good Luck." In true "Rat Pack" fashion, Dianne tackles a sexy arrangement of the timeless Frank Sinatra classic "Too Close for Comfort" that is sure to become a classic in its own right. Her energy is as infectious as her vocal stylization, and if anything rings true for the Big Phat band, it’s consistent energy-timeless and classic. Gordon Goodwin comments about this vibe that ran through the creation and recording of the Phat Pack: "We in the Big Phat Band have similar aspirations as the original Rat Pack:! To bring to our audience a form of timeless, creative music that remains significant. We try to play this music with energy, passion and abandon, and with the same sense of fun that Frank, Sammy and Dean had. We just do it without the tuxedos and the martinis and the cigarettes and the gambling and the guys named Jilly and the showgirls….

…Showgirls. Hmm. Now there’s a thought".

Summary: Fun Variety for my young Teen Daughter
Comment: Gordon Goodwin headlined with our district's middle school and high school band recently. This event got my daughter interested in trying out for her middle school jazz band. I purchased this so that she could get to know various jazz/bigband music. This is a favorite in our household. It's a nice change from some of the noise we hear on the radio.

Summary: Mixed story here...
Comment: Mr. Goodwin has at least three very inviable big band CDs to his credit including this one. However, something is a little different for me about this one relative to the first two: I find that I can't sit through the entire CD without wanting to move on to something else.

This could be because of the volume of material in this CD/DVD combination package. However, it also be something having to to with the mixing of this CD (not the DVD) - it sounds to me this it has been mixed to sound "loud" including VU meter average levels, even to the point that the sound engineering used some compression. This CD is just fatiguing to me, but the DVD is delightful. Maybe the the iPod users are supposed to listen to the CD, while home theater setups show the greatness of this music on the DVD.

The rating scale:
5 stars = Completely delighted with no dissatisfaction
4 stars = Full satisfaction with few if any dissatisfiers
3 stars = average overall satisfaction with at least one strong dissatisfier
2 stars = Below average overall satisfaction with strong dissatisfiers
1 star = Product did not meet minimum satisfaction level and has significant ethical issues assocated with its sale as advertised

Summary: BPB still awesome.
Comment: I've already listened to this three or four times, and like it better each time. Is it their best? I don't know. All three CDs have things I really like about them. Phat Pack has a sequel to Count Bubba called Count Bubba's Revenge that is better than the first. I'm not sure I like the sequel to Hunting Wabbits as good. But that's being nitpicky. Right from the opening track, it's a great CD, even the Attack Of The Killer Tomatoes. If you liked the other two, you'll love this one.
